Mar 14 and Jo’s birthday, what better way to spend the day wine tasting with besties, Jo and Penny, and even better Pennys daughter Laura driving.

Pick up was 0930 to ensure we bet the closure at Nevis Bluff and do some wineries in Bannockburn before back tracking to Gibbston.

First stop was in Cromwell at Aurum Winery. From there we headed back inland to Bannockburn. A valley behind Cromwell steeped in gold mining history. First stop here was Carrick Winery.

Our timing was perfect here and Kelly led us through the wines

Pens favourite wine here was EBM Chardonnay.

Next stop Mt Difficulty, Largest winery in Central Otago, served by name sake Nikki, always a good omen we were introduced to the Mt Diff wines. Nicky favourite here was the Chenin Blanc 2012. A wine recommended to cellar for 7-15years. At 50g/L residual sugar it is a wine that will be put in the back cupboard for many years to come.
Along side this Jo bought the Mt Difficuly Pinot Rose to have with our picnic lunch. Yum !!

Along Felton Road is Desert Heart Winery, a winery we were keen to visit as Penny and Nicky had tryed their Riesling and Pinot one Friday evening. Here we met owner Denny and enjoyed trying their award winning wines. The tasting room is in an old woolshed with some great local art and ceramic hearts on the walls.

After missing the 2.30pm Nevis Road opening, we had to miss any wineries in Gibbston. (Booked for another outing), and headed to The Boatshed Cafe in Frankton to meet up with ‘The Girls’ and Jo’s kids.

Owner Jane Shaw very kindly sent out a cake and candle for Jo, to raise a birthday toast.

Was a great day and looking forward to the next one girls !!
