Today we headed out to Avignon and onto Chateauneuf du Pape to taste some wines. The weather again was overcast but at least no rain.
The Colours are truly amazing. I always thought these fields were lavender, but on closer looks it is a type of salvia.
We had packed a picnic with baguette and some lovely pate a la maison from the local butcher and thought we would get a bottle of Rose to have on the way, but of course forgot about the French closing everything it seems from 1200 until at least 2pm. Right when we arrived in Chateauneuf du Pape. !!. After visiting 2 wineries and pulling in at many more it became obvious we would be having a dry lunch. We pulled up on the side of a driveway to have our lunch.
Avignon, a medieval town surrounded by ramparts and home to the popes from Rome in the 14th century it is therefore blessed with an exceptional heritage. A plot of AOC vines reflects the towns status as capital of the Cotes du Rhones.
One domain that we stopped at was Domaine De Tout-Vent. A large castle and cellar door host spoke great English which helped. The wine we enjoyed was a Cotes du Rhone 2011 which we purchased.
